A single clove of garlic will produce an entire head next summer. When planting garlic, choose the biggest cloves. Position your garlic cloves where they will be planted, spacing them apart 6 to 8 inches on center.

Dig up just enough soil to plant the clove 3 inches below the surface. Don’t plant to deep.

In Zones 4 and 5, garlic appreciates spending the Winter beneath an insulating layer of straw or shredded leaves. Layer your insulation about 6 layers in depth. Be sure to wait until the ground begins to freeze before you apply it.
